Can a Chiropractor help me with my whiplash?
Whiplash is a common injury that occurs when there has been a rapid forward and then backwards force on the neck or lower back (similar to a whip snapping). Most often it happens in car accidents, but what most don’t realise is that it can also occur in sporting injuries, falls or instances of physical abuse. How can Chiropractic care provide relief from whiplash symptoms?
Because of how the injury takes place, a huge amount of inflammation occurs in the injured area. Some components of the injury cause a massive compression of the joints in the spine and a spasming of the postural muscles as they try to stabilise the area. One may experience headaches, dizziness, vertigo, pins and needles down the arms and disturbed sleep. Along with this, there can be possible bruising of the cartilage in between the spinal joints, some muscular tears and even a fracture or dislocation in the spine. This is why it is imperative that after a whiplash-inducing injury, a spinal x-ray is taken. This rules out the more serious injuries where specialist intervention may be needed.
Chiropractors will carefully examine the joints that have been injured and are no longer moving well, along with identifying where pressure has been placed on the nervous system by muscles spasm and tightening.
Gentle Chiropractic adjustment techniques with some soft tissue work and stretching can loosen up the area to restore motion and allow the spinal alignment to normalise.
The sooner one can seek treatment for whiplash injuries, the sooner one will feel a difference in symptoms. It is not unusual to have patients who had suffered whiplash many years ago and never had it seen to, coming into a Chiropractic clinic years later complaining of symptoms that they are still experiencing from the injury. Some of their current complaints are related to this old injury and with sustained treatment, Chiropractic care can help manage the symptoms for most patients.
