A word of advice for new moms suffering Postpartum Pain

by | May 4, 2020 | Blog

Seeing to new moms during and after pregnancy is always a joy.  The changes that occur in the body are a miraculous sequence of events to witness.  As incredible as it is, these biological changes can leave new moms struggling with Postpartum aches and pains.  These are common but with gentle Chiropractic care, it doesn’t have to be the ‘new normal’.

Caring for a new-born baby is extremely rewarding.  It is also very hard work.  Between lifting, bending, long periods of sitting, holding, feeding, changes, bathing, and many other continuous repetitive motions during a day (and night), it can be taxing to the body’s joints and muscles.  The body has gone through tremendous physical changes (thanks to relaxin), as well as mental, emotional, and hormonal changes and this is understandably taxing as well as draining.

Being the best mom one can be is evident in the patients that come through to our clinics for Chiropractic help.  It is such a privilege for Chiropractors to be able to help new moms during this exciting phase.

Here are some tips to help stave off and manage some of the postpartum pain:

  • Keep work/changing surfaces at a comfortable height.  Put something under the legs of your changing table, for instance, to raise it if the table is too low.
  • Place one foot on a box or low shelf when you stand and change nappies. This helps your pelvis to tilt in a way that decreases pelvic fatigue.
  • Trying to hold your little one and wrestle the side of a crib down at the same time, is a monumental challenge.  Pre-plan a little and drop the crib side down before you pick up your baby.  This will save you twisting your lower back.
  • Do your best to avoid bending from the waist when you lift your baby. Squat with your back straight, keeping him/her close to you, and use your leg muscles to push up.
  • Avoid bending over into the car when placing your baby in the car seat.  Sit sideways on the seat with your baby on your lap, then rotate and settle them into the car seat.
  • Strollers nowadays have adjustable handles.  Adjust them to a height that is right for you so that you’re not bending over when you push.
  • Instead of favouring one side to carry your little one on, remember to always alternate sides so that you don’t strain the same side or joints continuously.

Let Chiropractic care be an integral partner along this journey, during and post-pregnancy.  New moms do an amazing job, being whatever version of the best they can be at this time.  Remember that self-care is important, so make sure to do it.  One cannot give from an empty cup.  Enjoy this journey.
